Fall On Your Sword is the fourth full-length album from Daphne Lee Martin, and the first to be produced by the songwriter herself. According to Martin, this collection of songs was written as a whole, “encompassing memories of fables, fairy tales, Bible stories, mythology, poetry, cautionary tales, traditional folk songs, and American popular culture of the 20th century.”

The result is rich, compelling, and funky, as this track, featuring rapper SuaveSki, ably demonstrates. Turn it up!

Fall On Your Sword comes out October 2, via The Telegraph Recording Company.

Confessions | I’d Take A Bullet For You

It’s hard to explain something so easy. Who doesn’t want to wake up next to someone who drives them wild? Sometimes at any cost. There’s a reason we are all fascinated by the story of Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow, we all kind of want to be them just a little bit. Go crazy, take what we want, and make love on the run.

Chasing the Demo
This is the earliest demo of ‘I’d Take A Bullet For You’ from June 22, 2013, with only Daphne’s backing vocals and midi parts.

Lyrical, Production & Music Notes
So if you caught yourself singing Haiti to this, you’re spot on. This is definitely my brain on Arcade Fire.

But then, I really wanted to get the feeling of this absolutely beautiful tune from The Head & The Heart, and I really can’t tell you all how excited I am about sharing this song in the live show.

The reference to the “perfect drug”, of course is the second reference to Nine Inch Nails on the album. But this was mostly about the ‘criminally’ unjust lack of publicity Bonnie Parker’s epic poetry got in the wake of her dramatic demise.

The full poem was written in Kaufman Jail in 1932 .

The Story of Suicide Sal

We each of us have a good “alibi”
For being down here in the “joint”;
But few of them really are justified
If you get right down to the point.

You’ve heard of a woman’s “glory”
Being spent on a “downright cur,”
Still you can’t always judge the story
As true, being told by her.

As long as I’ve stayed on this “island,”
And heard “confidence tales” from each “gal,”
Only one seemed interesting and truthful —
The story of “Suicide Sal.”

Now “Sal” was a gal of rare beauty,
Though her features were coarse and tough;
She never once faltered from duty
To play on the “up and up.”

“Sal” told me this tale on the evening
Before she was turned out “free,”
And I’ll do my best to relate it
Just as she told it to me:

I was born on a ranch in Wyoming;
Not treated like Helen of Troy;
I was taught that “rods were rulers”
And “ranked” as a greasy cowboy.”

Then I left my old home for the city
To play in its mad dizzy whirl,
Not knowing how little of pity
It holds for a country girl.

There I fell for “the line” of a “henchman,”
A “professional killer” from “Chi”;
I couldn’t help loving him madly;
For him even now I would die.

One year we were desperately happy;
Our “ill gotten gains” we spent free;
I was taught the ways of the “underworld”;
Jack was just like a “god” to me.

I got on the “F.B.A.” payroll
To get the “inside lay” of the “job”;
The bank was “turning big money”!
It looked like a “cinch” for the “mob.”

Eighty grand without even a “rumble” —
Jack was last with the “loot” in the door,
When the “teller” dead-aimed a revolver
From where they forced him to lie on the floor.

I knew I had only a moment —
He would surely get Jack as he ran;
So I “staged” a “big fade out” beside him
And knocked the forty-five out of his hand.

They “rapped me down big” at the station,
And informed me that I’d get the blame
For the “dramatic stunt” pulled on the “teller”
Looked to them too much like a “game.”

The “police” called it a “frame-up,”
Said it was an “inside job,”
But I steadily denied any knowledge
Or dealings with “underworld mobs.”

The “gang” hired a couple of lawyers,
The best “fixers” in any man’s town,
But it takes more than lawyers and money
When Uncle Sam starts “shaking you down.”

I was charged as a “scion of gangland”
And tried for my wages of sin;
The “dirty dozen” found me guilty —
From five to fifty years in the pen.

I took the “rap” like good people,
And never one “squawk” did I make.
Jake “dropped himself” on the promise
That we make a “sensational break.”

Well, to shorten a sad lengthy story,
Five years have gone over my head
Without even so much as a letter–
At first I thought he was dead.

But not long ago I discovered
From a gal in the joint named Lyle,
That Jack and his “moll” had “got over”
And were living in true “gangster style.”

If he had returned to me sometime,
Though he hadn’t a cent to give,
I’d forget all this hell that he’s caused me,
And love him as long as I live.

But there’s no chance of his ever coming,
For he and his moll have no fears
But that I will die in this prison,
Or “flatten” this fifty years.

Tomorrow I’ll be on the “outside”
And I’ll “drop myself” on it today;
I’ll “bump ’em” if they give me the “hotsquat”
On this island out here in the bay…

The iron doors swung wide next morning
For a gruesome woman of waste,
Who at last had a chance to “fix it,”
Murder showed in her cynical face.

Not long ago I read in the paper
That a gal on the East Side got “hot,”
And when the smoke finally retreated
Two of gangdom were found “on the spot.”

It related the colorful story
of a “jilted gangster gal.”

#SkinInTheGameTour :: UPDATE

Alright guys, it has been a long long week. For those of you who were really concerned about all the dates I had to postpone- my mom had a sudden and very serious medical emergency and I am in Florida this week looking after things with my family. I know a bunch of you know my mom from the days when we used to sing together, so I want you to know she’s gonna be alright and she’s coming back to CT to live with me for the summer while she recovers. I can’t tell you how excited and happy I am to have her around and I have lots of plans for house concerts and jam sessions throughout the summer when I’m not touring.

I’m afraid that I may have jumped the gun, you know me, forever the optimist (read:stubborn) and I hoped I’d be able to salvage the midwest dates of my tour. Unfortunately, I will not be able to swing that with the after care and new living situation for the time being. I’ll hang onto my daytrip gigs, in Belmar, NJ and in Bridgeport and all the New England June dates. Hoping to reschedule all the lost dates for this fall.

While I have you, I just want to say a great big thank you to the literally hundreds of friends and fans from dozens of states across the country who have reached out in private messages, emails, phone calls, voicemails, posts and in person to express their support, love and hopes for my quick return to the road. It means THE WHOLE WORLD. This week has taught me a lot of things, not only that life is so unbelievably precious and tenuous, but that the things that really matter more than anything are the relationships and love and trust we build while we are here, and I feel like the richest and luckiest woman in the world right now.
In other good news, No Depression reviewed ‪#‎Frost‬ this week and I can honestly say (disclaimer: I did not write The Book of Love, but yes it’s a great song) that this review is the most thorough and accurate glimpse into my purpose in sewing together the past to the present and perhaps also the future into my songwriting that I have ever read. I’ve sung traditional songs since, as my grandpa would say, I was “knee-high to a grasshopper” and I’ve always tried to weave those old songs into pop music forms. I’m so grateful to see someone who can understand the dimensions of that and celebrates and shares that connection with his readers. And calling mine the “definitive female voice of this tale” in my cover of Tom Waits ‘I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You’ is beyond anything I could have ever dreamt.
I love you guys. I can’t wait to begin a new chapter in my family, get back out there on the road to see you, and get this new record rolling. Thank you so much for your love and support. -Daph

Elmore Magazine Premieres ‘I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You’

Daphne Lee Martin, Tom Waits, You Say Trouble I Say Fun tour

As a part of her series of cover song singles, Daphne Lee Martin is releasing her version of the Tom Waits classic “I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You” and Elmore has the exclusive premiere.

The song (the original of which first appeared on Waits’ debut album, Closing Time) centers on Martin’s smoky, mournful vocals, accompanied by a reverb-drenched piano and some spare synth strings. It is true to the spirit, if not the instrumentation, of the original, which is perhaps one of the most explicitly romantic songs in Waits’ large, diverse catalog.

THE RIGHT COVERAGE – Set to release on the same day as TV on the Radio‘s long-awaited new album, this is the World Premiere of this most worthy TVOTR cover by Connecticut songstress DAPHNE LEE MARTIN. On the track, Martin is accompanied by Graham Thompson (guest co-vocals) and David Keith (drums). All other parts are covered and recorded by Daphne herself.

Frost review from the Valley Advocate

Jet Engines, by Amy McCarley, and Frost, by Daphne Lee Martin

This weekend, Amy McCarley and Daphne Lee Martin perform at Luthier’s Co-op in Easthampton in support of their new albums, Jet Engines and Frost, respectively.

“Everybody Wants To,” the first track from Alabama alt-country artist McCarley’s Jet Engines, begins with a philosophical inquiry into the nature of individuality and universality. She states that there are certain desires shared by everyone, then sings in her low alto: “Well I’m not everybody/ I’m just me/ But I am one body/ and anyone can see/ Everybody needs to believe in something/ And everybody is no different from me.”

McCarley plays acoustic guitar on all 10 of the album’s tracks. Her harmonica work lends an especially relaxed mood throughout, as does the guitar playing of George Bradfute, who sits in with his electric on “Smart Man,” and his slide on “Head Out of Town.”

After listening to McCarley, Martin’s indie offering Frost sounds especially synthesized—not in a bad way—with William James Readey using his keyboards to do an impressive impression of a samchillian tip tip tip cheeepeeeee. (The space age-sounding samchillian is a keyboard MIDI controller designed by Leon Guenbaum, who plays it so effectively in guitarist Vernon Reid’s band Masque.)

Frost begins with “Little Birds,” which is full of samchillian-esque sounds, before segueing into “The Book of Love,” the album’s only cover. The Magnetic Fields tune has also been covered by Peter Gabriel. The middle three tracks—”Make It Rain,” “More Flies With Honey,” and “Smile at Perfect Strangers”—show Martin’s jazzy blues side. “Five Points,” the eighth and final song, is an upbeat, electronica instrumental.

Ohio native and schooner veteran Martin sings and plays electric and acoustic guitar, banjo, flute, and other “sounds,” the album’s inside cover notes. Beneath the CD hold there is a stenciled quote: “Treat a queen like a whore and a whore like a queen,” which Mickey Doyle offered in Boardwalk Empire, just as Frank had in Alien 3.

Confessions | Make It Rain

Sigh. This song.
What if everything had gone differently? What if I’d made another decision at just that one moment of time? What path would I have been on if I’d just…?

Regret is a strange bedfellow. The veil of our history, filtering forever how we see the world ahead of us.  I read once somewhere that if you haven’t seen someone in the last five minutes, you can never make the assumption that you truly know them as they are now- life changing moments happen all the time and can shift our direction in an instant. Everyone seems so driven toward goals, ends, destinations, accomplishments, finality- even with the knowledge that the good stuff happens along the way, we seldom stop to appreciate when we have right this very now. The creation of memories that will fill us when we no longer have the strength, energy, and time to enjoy life the way we do when we are young.

So take the long way home. Try and forgive him for not calling you back, you had an amazing time together while it lasted and your heart isn’t so broken after all. Hug your friends and spend time with your kids and your parents. Be unafraid. Dance in the rain, and get soaking wet. Be ridiculous and don’t apologize for it. Admit your shortcomings and learn to live with yourself. Make it rain.

I guess that I must seem pretty tough

Lyrical cues I borrowed for this song come from a few places, the long black car features in  a Jim Carpenter song, Hole In My Heart. Jim mastered Frost and I just adore him and everything he does. I also borrowed from Woody Guthrie again, a passage where he describes a girl dancing and setting his weeds on fire. And of course, the best songwriter in the world, Mr. Tom Waits, although the namesake song is a far cry from the theme, I actually borrowed more from Take the Long Way Home.
